We are at work for making a better Community.
Purpose of FHNO is to provide a common platform for specialists in the field of Head and Neck Cancers (HNC) to interact on matters such as risk factors, unprecedented increase in HNC epidemiology, lack of foresight into controlling the manageable disease, limited resources and infrastructure to support the healthcare system thereby help establish methodologies and practices that would help curb the disease spread and build better disease management in India.
State of Head & Neck Cancer Management in India
Head and Neck Cancer has been a significant clinical problem in India, which is currently one of the countries with highest incidence of such cancers in the world. However, standards of care for this dreadful disease are not uniform and do not comply with the international norms of treatment. This has resulted in poor survival rates for patients across the country. Despite the high prevalence of this disease nationally, there has not been much development in clinical or scientific research in this field. Further, patient care is distributed among various specialties such as general surgery, otolaryngology, radiation oncology & medical oncology, thereby reducing standardization and efficacy of treatment.
Our Objective
Establishing uniform and accepted standards of care in the field of Head & Neck Cancers, in the country.
Promote research programs in basic sciences and other clinical areas.
Initiate educational activities like structured oncology training programs and fellowship in Head & Neck Oncology.
The association would be relevant but not limited to Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Maxillo-facial surgery, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology, Reconstructive Surgery, Basic Science, Allied specialties, Speech and Swallowing Therapy.
Office Bearers
Late Dr. Ram Mohan Tiwari
Dr Rammohan Tiwari (1934 – 2017) was a trained Surgical Oncologist & Neurosurgeon from Tata Memorial Hospital & Bombay Hospital respectively before undergoing training in UK, where he secured a fellowship of the Royal college and an appointment as a Consultant Otolaryngologist at Newcastle. He returned to Delhi, held a teaching faculty appointment in Maulana Azad Medical College before leaving to work in Surinam and Amsterdam. He obtained his Phd through research and spent most of his active surgical career in the Free University Hospital in Amsterdam, a centre he made famous by the quality of his work and research.
He is credited with describing the masseter myocutaneous flap, and a new approach to ensure adequate infratemporal clearance in Maxillectomy sinus tumours in addition to being a pioneer in skull base surgery.
In spite of spending many years outside the country, Dr Tiwari was a proud Indian who wore his nationalism on his sleeve. He was instrumental in founding the Foundation of Head and Neck Surgeons of India where his peers instituted an oration in his name in the annual conference of the FHNO. He was a mentor to numerous young surgeons in the early stages of their career as he gave off his time unstintingly for juniors.
However, beyond his legendary professional achievements, his numerous scientific memberships including the Fellowship of the royal society of medicine, and the American College of Surgeons , over 100 scientific peer reviewed papers and multiple awards, Dr Tiwari was a great man known for his enormous kindness, firmness of belief , concern for patients and politeness towards all. He will always be remembered as an amazing human being who left an indelible impression on the numerous lives he touched during his incredible journey of life.
