19th Annual FHNO Conference

The 19th National Conference of the Foundation of Head and Neck Oncology (FHNO) was held from 10th – 13th October at the Leela Palace in Chennai. It was a part of the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncology Societies’ (IFHNOS) 2019 World Tour.

Many ground breaking scientific papers were presented at the conference. Dr Jatin P Shah of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City gave the keynote address at the conference. He is amongst the world’s preeminent Head and Neck Oncology surgeons. He spoke on “Prognostication in Oral Cancers: TMN and Beyond.

Leading oncologists from around the world who are at the forefront of the war against cancer were present at the conference. This conference was used as a platform to share latest developments in cancer research around the world. Amongst them were Dr Joanne Patterson of Newcastle University, Dr June Corry of Peter MacCallum Cancer Center in Australia, Dr Joseph Califano of the University of California in San Diego, Dr Barbara Wollenberg of the University of Lubeck in Germany, Dr Arvind Krishnamurthy of the Adyar Cancer Institute and Dr C Rayappa of Apollo Cancer Hospitals in Chennai.

The conference was a resounding success with new friendships being formed and old bonds being strengthened among the eminent medical specialists who were in attendance at the conference.

The program received a tremendous response, which were reflected in the numbers attending the conference. We had over 700 participants for the program of which about 12% were speech and swallowing pathologists and therapists. There was a good mix of residents and post-graduates in training as well, who benefited greatly from the dynamic sessions conducted by world leaders in head and neck surgery.

The participants were from all over the globe including Indonesia, Burma, Germany, Bangladesh, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Nepal, South Africa and of course India. All aspects of Head and Neck Surgery were covered comprehensively in the sessions with focus on clinical aspects, decision-making and recent advances. The panel discussions were designed to be very interactive and informative.
